Traveling with piggies

Parva

Since the piggies and I just went on a small vacation, I just wanted to share some of my best advice for travelling with guinea pigs.

Buy the right carrier. Find a carrier which is safe for small pets - most pet supply stores have several different types, you can choose between. If you are completely certain your piggies will not start fighting, you can get a bigger carrier, so they can travel together - but if you are the least bit nervous they might fight, it is better to get several smaller carriers.

Use towels and cuddle sacks to make the piggies comfortable during travel. Piggies like to hide - and it can help a lot with their stress level if they can snuggle up in a cuddle sack.

Bring snacks. Piggies have sensitive digestive systems, and it is best for them to eat frequently. Be careful with placing hay in the carrier as it can poke their eyes. If you travel far, it is a good idea to bring veggies, such as cucumbers, which have high water content.

Make the travel as short and comfortable as possible. Pack your piggies' stuff as the last thing before leaving - and unpack it as the first thing, that way your piggies will spend the least time in their carrier. If you drive by car avoid turning on loud music - instead talk calmly to your piggies, this will most likely make them relax as they are used to your voice.

I also just wanted to add my opinion on some other travel-related questions that I get sometimes:

1) Can I travel by public transport with my piggies? You can, but try to make it least stressful possible. If there are other animals, keep your piggies away from them - and try to avoid places with loud noises. Possibly cover the carrier with a towel to reduce the impressions your piggie is exposed to.

2) Can I take my piggies on vacation with me? Yes, but think about how far you will travel to your destination and by which modes of transport. Also consider whether or not you can setup a nice temporary cage for them at your destination and for how long you will be gone. Piggies can get stressed easily and it can have consequences for their health.

3) Can I leave my piggies at home when I go on vacation? Yes, you definitely can. Make sure that someone checks on them daily - and give them fresh water, hay, pellets and veggies. I have had family and friends take care of my piggies - but I have also had to pay others to care for them, while I have been away.

Happy holidays to all of you!
